Toledo, Ohio is a fascinating city full of history and culture. Residents and visitors alike have a wide variety of activities and historical sites to visit or plan a day around. One of the most famous and sought after destinations in Toledo is their historical Farmer's Market.
A Brief History
The Toledo Farmer's Market has been open since 1832 when locals decided that they needed a central location where residents could purchase produce and other goods for daily living. The outdoor market moved to an indoor location between 1913 and 1917 but reverted back to the outdoor version in a new and restructured area. In 1928 the market moved to the Erie St. building located adjacent to the indoor market. The indoor market was a wholesale area for families that bought in bulk to can and preserve food for the winter. Over time the need for bulk purchases dropped and the indoor market closed. The outdoor market eventually required extensive renovation and repair, and a government grant allowed for the renovated market opening in 1996.
